Gum Disease: What You Should Know

What do you know about gum disease? While you probably know a few facts, would you be surprised to learn that there are many inaccurate rumors about the condition? To help you separate fact from fiction, we’re happy to discuss a few facts about gum disease.

For example, did you know that one of the most common myths about gum disease is that it’s perfectly normal for your gums to bleed while you’re flossing. Granted, if you haven’t brushed for some time, your gums could bleed, but this should only last a few weeks. If your gums continue to bleed, you could have gum disease and it could lead to serious problems. You see, when your gums are inflamed, bacteria and germs can enter your bloodstream through your mouth and eventually spread throughout your body. If this happens, you could be in danger of heart disease, arthritis, and stroke.

Still, have you been told that it’s fairly rare? Sadly, gum disease is actually fairly common. Sadly, this isn’t true. In fact, nearly half of Americans over thirty have some form of gum disease and not know it. Sadly, gum disease can be difficult to detect. We recommend visiting Dr. Michelle Metcalf once every six months for a checkup. Our team at Smiles Dental will be able to detect gum disease and help you address the issue.
